Social network X has just 2,294 content moderators, significantly fewer than Google and TikTok, a European Commission official said Friday. The Digital Services Act (DSA), in force since August 25, 2023, imposes additional liability on tech giants for user-generated content. The EU has named 19 online platforms for close scrutiny over DSA compliance, including Google, X, TikTok, Apple, Meta✴ Platforms, and Microsoft.

According to September data submitted to the EU, Google YouTube has 16,974 content moderators, Google Play has 7,319, and TikTok has 6,125. This is significantly more than social network X, which reduced its moderators after Elon Musk's ownership. The European Commission official hopes X will increase moderators to comply with competitors. The Commission has doubled its employees ensuring DSA compliance from 50 to 120 people.

From February 17 next year, all intermediary service providers must comply with DSA requirements, not just the 19 named in April.
