Social network X faces scrutiny for content moderation in the EU

Due to new European Union Digital Services Act (DSA) requirements, Elon Musk's social platform X has come under regulatory scrutiny for not having enough content moderators in Europe — just 2,294 employees. This number is significantly inferior to that of its competitors. This fact raises serious questions about Musk's company's ability to meet the DSA's strict requirements to combat illegal and harmful content.

The European Commission recently passed the DSA, a law requiring major online platforms and search engines including Google, X, TikTok, Apple, Meta✴ Platforms and Microsoft to step up efforts to combat illegal and harmful content. Social network X has only 2,294 content moderators in the EU, which is significantly less than other services: YouTube has 16,974, Google Play has 7,319, and TikTok has 6,125 moderators.

The EU hopes X will do more to moderate content as it faces pressure from competitors and regulators. At the same time, the European Commission has doubled the number of its staff monitoring compliance with the DSA to 120 people.

There are concerns that without enough moderators, Company X may have trouble complying with the law, which could have serious consequences. From February 17, 2024, the DSA requirements will apply to all service intermediaries, not limited to the 19 largest services mentioned earlier.
